Ambassadors Deborah Jones and Vicki Huddleston explore Libya in Chaos: Origins, Players and Outcomes. Jones, appointed US Ambassador to Libya in 2013 following the death at Benghazi of Ambassador Chris Stevens in September 2012, led the overland evacuation of the American embassy in Tripoli in July 2014 following the outbreak of active hostilities. Jones was active in the UN-led political reconciliation talks that led to the establishment of a Government of National Accord (GNA) in 2015. Since then, Libya has spiraled downward into an intractable civil war (nominally between the GNA in Tripoli and former Gaddafi-era general Khalifa Haftar and his so-called Libyan National Army) that has caused thousands of deaths and over 200,000 displaced citizens. Jones posits that the ongoing conflict, abetted by the involvement of regional powers, foreign fighters and weaponry, is in fact a continuation of the 2011 revolution and reflects the deep fissures within Libyan society exposed following the UN-approved, US-led NATO intervention to prevent Muammar Gaddafi’s threatened attacks on civilian protestors in Benghazi.
