Can the United States successfully confront the many existential threats facing the country? What role will the military play — both abroad and at home? China is gaining in power and standing as the United States seemingly retreats from leadership. The NATO Alliance is jeopardized by the proposed withdrawal of troops from Germany, while arms agreements with Russia have either been abrogated or are in jeopardy. And, many Americans are now questioning the role of the military in quelling protests at home. What is the military’s role in addressing cyberspace threats, genetic manipulation, and information warfare?
A three-star Marine General, General Walter Gaskin served as the Deputy Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, providing military and operational advice to NATO’s Secretary General and North Atlantic Council from 2010 until his retirement in 2013. Rear Admiral Janice Hamby’s career included service on the staff of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff; in major command of operations in combat zones (including Iraq); and as the first woman to report to a combatant vessel for permanent assignment.
