In this fourth segment of our Rule of Law series, our panel will discuss how resiliency and sustainability must be instilled into Rule of Law structures so they may survive and flourish for current and future presidential administrations. Merely shoring up the pre-2017 foundation would invite renewed assaults, perhaps more successfully destructive, in the US and throughout the world. The insidious growth for over a century of the Imperial Presidency, feeding on ceded and appropriated powers of other federal branches and of State sovereigns, metastasized in recent years into tools authoritarians may use to promote their personal interests and whims in socially harmful ways. With other countries modeling on how America treats the Rule of Law, its strengths or weaknesses and resilience or rigidity here will alternately assist democracies and republics to work on their own earthquake-proof structures or assist authoritarians to mask power grabs through “law and order” invocations of the Rule of Law.
Panelists include Chuck Case (retired US bankruptcy judge and CIR Board President); Richard Briles Moriarty (whose legal career spanned 40+ years in public and private sectors, and included arguing before the US Supreme Court); Richard Silver (former foreign service officer, lawyer, CIR Board Member). Vicki Huddleston (former US ambassador to Mali, Madagascar, and Chief of the US Interests Section in Cuba) moderates.
