Around the world it seems that democracy is under attack. We’re all familiar with the recent challenges here in the United States, but places as diverse as Myanmar, Poland, and Brazil recently experienced significant challenges to democracy. At the same time, local news in the United States and around the world are in decline. As media increasingly becomes national and global, available at the click of a button, there are fewer resources available for the local journalists doing the hard work of holding the powerful accountable, connecting community, and creating a shared sense of identity.

In this CIR discussion, we’ll talk with journalists about the intersection of their work with democracy and how they see the challenges facing local news contributing to global and local threats to democracy. How has a changing media ecosystem contributed to the rise of disinformation and “fake news”? What steps are local news organizations taking to stay relevant, and what can the average news consumer do to support local journalism?

Speakers: Karen Coates is an independent journalist who covers food, environment, health, and human rights globally. Jessica Onsurez is the award-winning News Director of the Carlsbad Current-Argus, Alamogordo Daily News and Ruidoso News, all members of the USA TODAY network in New Mexico. A native daughter of New Mexico, her work has carried her from the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. to Peru with the U.S. Peace Corps. Rashad Mahmood (moderator) is the Co-Director of the New Mexico Local News Fund and 2021 John S. Knight Community Impact Fellow. He has worked in New Mexico journalism for seven years, and previously worked in international development in Washington DC, Egypt and Iraq.
